The federal judiciary recorded 574,314 filings in the 12 months ending December 2025, up from 517,308 in the prior 12-month period. In that series, Chapter 7 filings were 356,724 and Chapter 13 filings were 207,889.
Its fiscal-year reporting shows a similar pattern. Of 557,376 petitions filed in fiscal year 2025, Chapter 7 accounted for 344,825 cases and Chapter 13 accounted for 203,118. The difference between the two totals comes from the reports’ different cutoff dates, not competing estimates.
For people considering a filing, a national trend does not decide what applies to an individual situation. Chapter choice, eligibility, exemptions, deadlines, fees, and local court procedures depend on the facts of each case.
